After working with Imus, he got his own weekend show on Saturday Mornings. Russo was paired with Mike Francesca, who was hosting a mid-morning show. Their show was named Mike and the Mad Dog and was launched on 5 September 1989 to replace the Pete Franklin show, which aired from 3 to 7 pm.

Russo reached an agreement on 14 August 2008 for WFAN to release him from his contract. The following day, he called Francesca during the show for an emotional goodbye. They reunited on a one-hour show at Yankee Stadium on 16 October 2009. Russo joined Francesca on 30 March 2016 on Radio City Music Hall for a Mike and the Mad Dog reunion.

Russo signed a contract with Sirius XM Radio for five years on 19 August 2008 for their new sports talk channel, which was named Mad Dog Radio.
