Darius Miles Facts

  1. Before entering the 2000 NBA draft, he signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the St. John’s Red Storm men’s basketball team alongside fellow top recruit, Omar Cook. He played with the Clippers for 2 seasons, which earned him an NBA All-Rookie Team first-team honor in 2001.
  2. Miles alongside Quentin Richardson, Corey Maggette, , and Elton Brand, entertained many fans with their exciting high flying playing style.
  3. Following his 2001-2002 season, Miles was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers alongside Harold Jamison. He was traded in a deal for Andre Miller and Bryant Stith before being traded to the Portland Trail Blazers for Jeff McInnis and Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje midway through the 2003-2004 season.
  4. Miles made rounds in the headlines during the 2004-05 season after he reportedly attacked then-coach Maurice Cheeks with racial insults.
  5. On April 19, 2005, Miles scored a career-high of 47 points in a loss against the Denver Nuggets, which is equivalent to the eighth-highest single-game output recorded in franchise history.
  6. He severely injured his right knee in the late 2005-2006 season. Despite obtaining an injury during the season, Miles managed to play his 40th and last game of the season 5 days later. After his game, he didn’t make it to the entire 2006-07 and 2007-08 NBA seasons as he underwent microfracture surgery to repair his injury.
  7. In March 2008, in an attempt to shed Miles’s $18 million worth contract, the Portland Trail Blazers petitioned the NBA and the NBA Players Association to provide an independent doctor to decide whether he could play again or not. Though the examination showed that Miles’s injury was severe enough to be career-ending, which prompted the Blazers to request waivers for his release, he was given the option to sign a deal with another team if offered a contract, reverting the $18 million savings the Blazers hoped to gain if he played in 10 games in 2008.
  8. On August 22, 2008, he was signed by Boston Celtics to a non-guaranteed contract where he could earn a roster spot at the training camp. Despite showing an impressive health state and attitude, he was waived before the beginning of the regular season.
  9. On December 13, 2008, Miles signed with the Memphis Grizzlies. His season debut came with the team on January 4, 2009, following his 10-game suspension. He was waived on January 7, 2009, after he obtained 2 rebounds and 2 blocks in 9 minutes for 2 games. On January 9, 2009, he was re-signed by the Grizzlies to a 10-day contract and on January 30, the Grizzlies signed him for the rest of the 2008–09 season. On July 9, the Grizzlies abdicated their rights on Miles to save the cap room.
  10. In 2004, he appeared in the teen comedy-heist film The Perfect Score. In addition to his filmography, he also appeared in the National Lampoon’s Van Wilder (2002), where he acted alongside former Clippers teammates Michael Olowokandi and Richardson, and in the documentary The Youngest Guns (2004) which narrated Miles’s and Richardson’s early years in the NBA.
