Dmitri Aliev Facts
- Coming from a family of competitive skiers, Dmitri too had wanted to become a sportsman as a child, and had shown interest in both skiing and figure skating. He started getting trained in the latter in 2005, at the age of 6, and in 2013 had moved to Saint Petersburg to train under famed coach Evgeni Rukavicin.
- Although he had won a ‘Bronze’ medal at the 2016 Winter Youth Olympics in the singles event representing Russia, he had participated as part of a Mixed-NOC team at the team event. He went to win a ‘Gold’ medal at the team competition. A Mixed-NOC team comprises of athletes representing different National Olympic Committees (NOCs), and such teams often participate in events that involve only Mixed-NOC teams. This concept was first introduced at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics and has been used in sports such as Curling, Figure Skating, Luge, Short track speed skating, Snowboarding, and Speed skating.
- When he won the ISU Junior Grand Prix (JGP) Final in the 2016-17 season, he had scored a combined (short program and free skate) total of 240.07 points. The score was the then-record for junior-level men’s figure skating competitions. It was later surpassed by Vincent Zhou at the 2017 World Junior Figure Skating Championships.
- He holds the record of being the first European figure skater to have attempted and completed 3 different quad jumps – The toe loop, The Lutz, and The Salchow – in international competitions.
