In 1981, he took a break of two years to take the position of assistant coach at his former high school, Bishop Kenrick. He then assumed the position of assistant coach with the University of Virginia Cavaliers Women team.

He then joined the Huskies Women’s Basketball team, but before he arrived in 1985, the team had only one winning season in history. During the assessment of this position, most of the qualified candidates were women. Another one included in the interview process was Chris Dailey, who became his assistant. Had he turned down the position, Chris would have taken that offer.

By 2001, he became the head coach of the US women’s team. The team participated in the 2001 Junior World Championship in Brno, in the Czech Republic, and was able to win the first five games.
