Pépin was born in Bourg-en-Bresse, France, in 1935, the second of three kids. After WWII, his parents, Jeannette and Jean-Victor Pépin bought the café Le Pélican, where Pépin worked as a child and later became famous for his love of food. He started his apprenticeship at the Grand Hôtel de l’Europe in Bourg-en-Bresse when he was thirteen years old. He went to work in Paris at the age of 16, preparing under Lucien Diat at the Plaza Athénée.
