He moved to San Francisco after graduating from RISD. Chesky relocated to Los Angeles, while Gebbia took a job at Chronicle Books in San Francisco. In 2007, Gebbia persuaded his friend Brian Chesky to relocate to San Francisco and start a company with him. Their landlord increased their rent after they both left their employment, and they were in desperate need of cash.
