Joe Montana is an American former professional football player who is widely regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of the sport. He had represented the San Francisco 49ers (1979–1992) and the Kansas City Chiefs (1993–1994) in the NFL (National Football League), winning the Super Bowl (NFL’s annual championship game) 4 times (XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV) with the San Francisco 49ers. Joe was named the Super Bowl ‘MVP’ in 3 of those games (XVI, XIX, XXIV) becoming the first player in history to achieve the feat. He had also helped the Kansas City Chiefs to the franchise’s first AFC (American Football Conference) championship game in January 1994. He was selected to the Pro Bowl (NFL’s All-Star Game) 8 times (1981, 1983–1985, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1993) and named the NFL‘s ‘Most Valuable Player’ twice (1989, 1990). Joe was included in the NFL‘s ‘1980s All-Decade Team’, the ’75th Anniversary All-Time Team’, and the ‘100th Anniversary All-Time Team’. In 1999, The Sporting News website had placed him at number 3 in its list of ‘Football’s 100 Greatest Players’, and ESPN had ranked him at number 25 in its compilation of ‘Greatest Athletes of the 20th Century’. He was inducted into the ‘Pro Football Hall of Fame’ in 2000.

  1. He was a multi-skilled athlete in his high school days and used to play football, baseball, and basketball. He had helped Ringgold High School win the 1973 WPIAL (Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League) Class AAA boys’ basketball championship. In 2006, Ringgold High School had renamed their football stadium as ‘Joe Montana Stadium’.
  2. His performances in basketball were so good that he had been offered a sports scholarship by North Carolina State University. He had eventually turned down the offer but he had considered it very seriously for a long time as they had promised him that he could play both basketball and football for them.
  3. In 1986, at the peak of his professional football career, he had been diagnosed with a narrow spinal cavity. He chose to undergo surgery to correct the deformity and was able to resume his career after a brief period of rehabilitation.
