Kaori Sakamoto Facts
- Like most competitive figure skaters, Kaori had started getting trained in the sport from a very early age. She had started in 2004, when she was just 4 years old, in her hometown of Kobe.
- At the junior level, she had won the ‘Gold’ medal at the 2016 ISU Junior Grand Prix (JGP) Japan, the 2013 Asian Open Figure Skating Trophy, the 2014 International Challenge Cup, and the Japan Junior Figure Skating Championships in the 2016-17 season.
- She had also won the ‘Silver’ medal at the Japan Junior Figure Skating Championships in the 2014-15 season, the 2015 ISU JGP Latvia and the 2016 ISU JGP France; as well as the ‘Bronze’ medal at the 2017 World Junior Figure Skating Championships and the ISU Junior Grand Prix (JGP) Final in the 2016-17 season.
- At the novice tier of competition, she had won the ‘Gold’ medal at the Japan Junior Figure Skating Championships in the 2012-13 season as well as the ‘Silver’ medal at the 2013 Triglav Trophy in the ‘International: Advanced Novice’ tier.
- A stress fracture in her right shinbone that she had sustained in October 2015 had heavily curtailed her 2015-16 competitive season. When she returned to training about a month later, she had to practice skating without the ability to execute any jumps or loops.
- She had also suffered from the flu in 2017 at a critical time in her career. She had been brought in as a replacement for her injured compatriot at the 2017 Asian Winter Games but had to herself withdraw from the competition due to the viral infection.
