Katrina Scott Facts
- Katrina’s mother, Lena, was a ballet dancer in Iran and had moved to the United States aged 17 to seek better medical facilities for her mother who was suffering from breast cancer.
- Lena had enrolled Katrina for ballet lessons when the latter was just 18 months old. When Katrina did not show an inclination towards the dance form, her mother had encouraged her to try figure skating, at the age of 3.
- She quickly developed an interest in the sport and would train several hours a day even at such a tender age. However, one day when Katrina’s mother could not pick her up from figure skating practice, she car-pooled with a friend who had to attend tennis lessons. Katrina tried her hand at tennis as well and immediately realized that she would pursue the sport. Her father started taking her interest in tennis seriously when she started performing creditably in tournaments for girls aged 12 or below.
- Even though she made her senior Grand Slam debut at the 2020 US Open, her path to the tournament wasn’t straightforward. She was given a wildcard entry 18 days after the original list of wildcards was released. This had happened because several players had withdrawn from the tournament due to safety concerns related to the coronavirus outbreak, in general, and its impact on the United States, in particular.
Owing to her Iranian heritage via her mother, she grew up bilingual. Besides English, she is fluent in Farsi, a Western Iranian language.
