He was born Levardis Robert Martyn Burton Jr. in Landstuhl, Germany on 16 February 1957. His father Levardis Robert Burton was a U.S. Army photographer and during his birth his father was stationed at Landstuhl. His mother Erma Gene worked as an educator, administrator and social worker. When he was young his parents separated and together with his two sisters they were raised by their mother in Sacramento, California.

Levar was raised as a Roman Catholic and as a teenager, he had intentions of becoming a priest and he even went to St. Pius X Minor Seminary. When he was 17 years old he started questioning the Catholic faith and eventually changed his vocation and decided to become an actor.
