Marko Grujić Facts
- A child prodigy, Marko had started his youth career with his hometown club Red Star Belgrade in 2005, at the age of just 9. He spent nearly 8 years in the club’s development program, often serving as the squad captain, and was promoted to their senior team in 2013 after which he represented them for 3 years.
- In the 2015-16 season, when Red Star Belgrade won the national league title, he was a key part of the squad that set a record by winning 19 successive games.
- While Serbia won the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in 2015, their road to the title was filled with ups and downs. They had lost their first group stage game but bounced back by winning their next 2 games to top their group. In the knockout stages, their Round-of-16, semifinal, and final matches were all stretched into extra time, and they won each match with an identical margin of 2-1. In their epic quarter-final match against the United States, Marko had scored one of the goals in their eventual 6-5 penalty shootout win which had dragged on for 9 shots each after the game had ended in a 0-0 deadlock after extra time.
- In 2016, he became the very first signing of new Liverpool FC manager who had been acquired to turn the club’s fortunes around. However, did not make too many appearances for the club and was loaned out for long spells to Red Star Belgrade, Cardiff City, and Hertha BSC. In June 2020, after impressive performances for Hertha BSC, it was announced that he would return to Liverpool FC with increased chances that he would manage to earn more chances in their main squad.
