Between 2013 and 2019, he had participated in numerous competitions around the world, on the independent circuit. Over the course of his career, he has won several titles including the All Pro Wrestling Universal Heavyweight Championship, the Big League Wrestling World Heavyweight Championship, the Imperial Wrestling Revolution Heavyweight Championship, the New Japan Pro Wrestling Intercontinental Championship, the WWE United States Championship (3 times), and the WWE Tag Team Championship.

1. Born in the Liberty City neighborhood of Miami, Montel had grown up in  Opa-locka, Florida, where his father was a police officer. His teenage years though had taken quite a different turn after he had joined a street gang at the age of 12. He had even spent about 6 months in a juvenile detention center after a robbery.
2. At the age of 16, he was handed an 18-and-a-half-year prison sentence after being found guilty of armed robbery and kidnapping. He was released after serving 9-and-a-half-years of his jail term. While in jail, he had converted to Islam and had changed his name from Alvin Antonio Burke Jr. to Hassan Hamin Assad. He later renounced the religion and became an atheist.
3. Due to his extensive criminal record in the past, he has often had to face thorough and extensive background checks to attain permits and visas for visits to other countries on international tours.
4. In 2008, he was ranked at number 23 in the ‘PWI 500’, an annual list of the 500 best wrestlers in the world, published by Pro Wrestling Illustrated (PWI) magazine.
