Ray Charles was a legendary American singer and music composer who was ranked at number 2 by Rolling Stone magazine in its 2008 list of the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time”. Ray had started to lose his vision by the age of 5 due to glaucoma and was completely blind by the age of 7 but he nonetheless embarked on his spirited quest to achieve musical greatness that he was always destined to. He is considered to be the pioneer of the soul music genre and he also contributed to the integration of country music, rhythm and blues, and pop music. During his remarkable career, Ray achieved the distinction of placing 44 singles in the Top 10 of the US R&B singles charts.

  1. In 1979, Ray was inducted into the ‘Georgia Music Hall of Fame’ and his rendition of the song Georgia on My Mind was made the official song of the state of Georgia.
  2. In 1981, he was honored with a star on the ‘Hollywood Walk of Fame’. He was also the inaugural inductee in the ‘Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’ in 1986.
  3. In 1987, he received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1993, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts.
  4. Ray’s most popular song was the 1962 hit I Can’t Stop Loving You. The song stayed at number 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 charts for 5 weeks.
