Briggs started out at the Starrett City Boxing Club under the guidance of James O’Farrell. He competed in the heavyweight division and became New York City Golden Gloves Champion. By the end of 1991, he was ranked as third nationally in his class. At the time, his manager was Mike Marley, ex-post boxing writer who later managed him as a professional.

He began his professional career in 1992, being trained by Teddy Atlas, and was undefeated in his first 25 fights. He suffered his first loss after being knocked out by Darroll Wilson in Atlantic City in 1996. Briggs fought the lineal heavyweight champion, George Foreman on the 22nd of November 1997.

The fight went on for a full twelve rounds before Briggs securing the victory after the judges’ decision. Briggs went on to fight Lennox Lewis for WBC Heavyweight title. This was after a decision by WBC that the winner of the Briggs-Foreman fight would be Lewis’ next opponent. Lewis won the match via technical knockout.

Briggs spent the next seven years fighting low-ranked fighters where he scored 17 wins, 2 losses, and a draw. Briggs fought with Sergei Liakhovich on the 4th of November 2006. He won the match via knockout and emerged as the new WBO heavyweight champion. He defended his title on the 10th of March 2007 against Sultan Ibragimov and unfortunately lost the match. Briggs fought for the WBC heavyweight title against Vitali Klitschko on the 16th of March 2010, he was beaten up badly thus losing the match. Briggs did a couple of other some fights until 2019 and also competed in the K-1 kickboxing promotion in 2004.
