1. Sheldon’s trademark ‘march-and-salute’ celebration is a tribute to the Jamaican Defence Force. He was a part of the force for more than 10 years and had started working there at the age of 18. Incidentally, in 2011, he was a part of the army workforce that was deployed for security during the 5th ODI match of a bilateral series between the West Indies and India at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.
2. After making his ODI debut in January 2015, he was selected to play for the West Indies in the 2015 World Cup. However, after conceding 73 runs and going wicketless in a warm-up game against lowly Scotland, he did not get selected for any of the team’s 7 matches in the World Cup proper.
3. After the tournament, he found himself on the sidelines and had to wait for more than 2 years for a comeback in the ODI team, returning in a game against New Zealand, in December 2017.
4. In 2019, he was named in the West Indies’ World Cup squad again. In an otherwise dismal campaign, where the team finished second-from-bottom in the league stage, Sheldon was one of the very few bright spots for the West Indies and ended up as the leading wicket-taker for the team with 12 wickets in 9 games.
5. As his stock in the international and franchise game grew since 2017, he was bought by the Kings XI Punjab franchise at the December 2019 IPL auctions for a staggering INR 8.5 Crore (USD 1.2 million approx.) which was 17 times more than his auction base price of INR 50 Lakhs (USD 70.4 k approx).
6. His last name is actually ‘Cotterell’ and appears as such in his driver’s license. He also uses the same spelling in his Twitter username, Twitter handle, and for the URL of his official website.
7. Sheldon has also been on the receiving end of the ‘salute’ celebration a few times, most notably when English batsman Jos Buttler saluted him back after smashing him for a 6 during a brutal knock of 150 in an ODI match in February 2019. During the 2019 World Cup, English coach Trevor Bayliss had even stated that he found Sheldon’s celebration style annoying.
