Stephen Ray Perry was born on the 22nd of January 1949 in Hanford, California. He was the only child of two Portuguese parents from Azores, Raymond Perry (Pereira) and Mary Quaresma. When he was 16, Perry moved to Sacramento to start a band with his mates called Ice. Unfortunately, the band fell apart because of lack of any management. After his mother’s urgency, Perry was able to answer the call from Walter “Herbie” Herbert, the manager of a San Francisco band called Journey.

Perry was the lead vocalist on nine of Journey’s albums and in 1984, he released his first solo album, “Street Talk”, which sold more than two million units. This really affected the band and they disbanded in 1987.
