- He had started playing tennis when she was 6 years old, and when she had turned 8, she had moved to Atlanta to train under renowned coach Donald Young Sr. Her mother, Sheila, is a close friend of Donald as they had grown up together in Chicago.
- Her breakthrough year in the junior circuit had come in 2012 when she had finished at number 1 in the year-end girls’ junior rankings. She was the first American player, since Gretchen Rush in 1982, to achieve the feat and was consequently named the ITF (International Tennis Federation) Junior World Champion for the year.
- When she had won the 2012 Australian Open junior tournament, aged 15, she was just the 2nd American to do so, after Kim Kessaris in 1989. At the same event, she had also won the doubles title which had made her the first American to win both the singles and doubles titles at a junior Grand Slam event since Lindsay Davenport had done the same at the 1992 US Open.
