Fabienne Wohlwend is a Liechtensteiner professional racing driver who began competing in the W Series in 2019, the inaugural season of the all-female Formula 3-level racing championship. She stood 6th out of 20 drivers in the 6-race season with a 3rd-place finish in the Misano leg (3rd) of the competition. She had started her car-racing career in 2016 with the Formula 4 Italy championship and over the next 3 years, she participated in several competitions in Italy, winning the Ferrari Challenge Finali Mondiali – Trofeo Pirelli (Pro-Am) standalone event in 2018 which made her, on a technicality, the first female World Champion on 4 wheels. She had also finished as a runner-up at the 14-round Ferrari Challenge Europe – Trofeo Pirelli (Pro-Am) championship in 2018 and stood 3rd at the Ferrari Challenge Finali Mondiali – Coppa Shell standalone event in 2017. As of July 2020, she was Liechtenstein’s only female professional racing driver and the country’s most successful driver in history with 72 starts and 5 wins. She was nominated for the ‘Liechtenstein Sportswoman of the Year’ award in both 2018 and 2019.

Fabienne Wohlwend Facts

1. Before participating in the Formula 4 Italy championship in 2016, Fabienne had competed in karting competitions in both Liechtenstein and Switzerland. The first such event that she had participated in was the 2007 Swiss Karting Championship. She was just 10 years old at that time. The following year, in 2008, she won the Liechtenstein Karting Championship.
2. She is only the 3rd professional racing driver to have represented Liechtenstein, after Frederick von Opel and Manfred Schurti. In the early days of her career, she had worked at the Vaduz branch of VP Bank to fund her racing dreams.
3. At the Formula 4 Italy championship in 2016, her best performance was the 11th place finish in the final race of the season at the famed Autodromo Nazionale Monza circuit. Although she did not score any points in the season, she won the ‘Women’s Trophy’ class uncontested as she was the only female driver in the competition.
4. At the 2017 Ferrari Challenge Europe – Coppa Shell championship, she earned 4 podium finishes, scored 2 poles, and won 1 out of the 6 races that she competed in. Her win at the Imola leg of the competition made her the first female driver to win a race outright for the Ferrari marque.
5. In the 2019 W Series, when she secured a 3rd-place finish in the Misano leg (3rd) of the competition, she had secured pole position in the qualifying round. This was only the 2nd time that a Liechtensteiner had claimed pole position in an FIA-sanctioned open-wheel racing competition.
