The following year, he defeated the heavyweight champion, Ken Norton, on the 54th second by a knockout. He broke the record which was formerly set by Lee Savold in 1948.

He fought with Holmes the following year, but was briefly knocked down, which made him fight bravely. Holmes was more experienced and skillful than Cooney, and after 12 rounds, Holmes wore him down. His trainer, Valle, stepped into the ring to save him from more punishment in the 13th round. However, after the fight, Cooney and Holmes became friends.

He was laid off for some time but returned in September 1984 with a fight with Philip Brown. He beat him after the fourth-round knockout. His last fight was in 1990, but he was knocked out by former champion George Foreman in two rounds. At the end of his boxing career, he recorded 28 wins, three losses, and 24 knockouts.
