In 1989, at Daytona 500, the season with DNF. He won his first Winston Cup at Rockingham, defeating Rusty Wallace by 3 seconds.

In 1990, he got his first finish in the big race by finishing at 21st place in Daytona 500. The controversy took place that he had raced with an illegal carburetor for which he has penalized 46 championship points. The 1991 season was worse compared to the previous season.
