Paula Deen Facts
- Paula’s parents had passed away by the time she was 23 years old and consequently, she used to suffer from panic attacks and agoraphobia (anxiety disorder). It was then that she shifted her focus to cooking as that was one activity for which she did not need to leave her home.
- She learned the hand-me-down art of Southern cooking from her grandmother Irene.
- After her divorce to Jimmy Deen, she was struggling financially and was finding it difficult to raise her sons and help out her younger brother. She worked odd jobs such as hanging wallpapers, selling real estate, and working as a bank teller to make ends meet. Eventually, she began a catering service that her sons used to help out with by delivering the meals.
- As her catering business grew, she began a restaurant called The Lady in 1991 in Savannah, Georgia and another called The Lady & Sons in 1996. The Lady & Sons was awarded the “International Meal of the Year” award in 1999 by USA Today magazine.
- Her lifestyle magazine called Cooking with Paula Deen was released in November 2005.
- In March 2015, she launched the Paula Deen Channel on the Roku platform.
- She participated in the 2015 season of the popular dance-based reality TV series Dancing with the Stars. She was eliminated in the 6th week of the season and finished 9th overall.
- In October 2016, a syndicated TV show called Positively Paula was launched.
