Yuen Biao Facts

  1. He was raised in Hong Kong and he became a huge fan of martial artists and got inspired to follow the same path as that of his idols.
  2. Beginning from his early days at the China Drama Academy, he displayed a keen interest in learning Kung Fu and when he became a teenager, he excelled at it. Jackie Chan has affirmed that Biao was the fastest learner among them all and had the natural skills required for the art. He has added further that when he was asked to perform a backflip on his very first day at the academy, he surprised everyone by doing a perfect one on his very first attempt.
  3. “Yuen” was the surname of his master Yu Jim-yuen at the Peking Opera School. He has followed the custom of school graduates honoring their teacher by taking his name as their stage name. “Biao” stands for a youthful tiger in its prime.
  4. By the time Biao graduated from opera school, the demand for swordplay and Kung Fu performances was waning. That made graduates like him venture into the Hong Kong film industry giving rise to the now-classic, multi-genre modern action films of the 1980s. He had realized then that his teacher had taught him very useful and relevant things that are not done in regular schools. Yuen had learned opera that proved to be a great skill for the entertainment industry. He felt lucky that the public in Hong Kong took to the new kind of movies.
  5. Yuen has worn glasses since his adolescence and has kept them on in a few of his movies such as Wheels on Meals (1984), Mr. Vampire II (1986), and Dong an X Sha ren fan (1997).
  6. Biao has been one of the rare Hong Kongese performers who have a more devoted fan following in Japan than in their motherland.
